COGNITIVE PROCESSING THERAPY
~ CPT ~

Trauma creates distorted and maladaptive beliefs/thoughts about ourselves, others and the world, such as blaming yourself or believing the world is unsafe. This contributes towards PTSD, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, in addition to poor, and often destructive life patterns and behaviours that stay with us until we challenge and change them.

Oftentimes we don’t even realize we are living our lives according to these trauma beliefs. But you will notice unhealthy and often destructive behaviours and patterns in our life such as:

  • Unhealthy or abusive relationships

  • Control/power issues

  • Difficulty trusting

  • Intimacy issues

  • Low self esteem

  • Safety issues

 

Working one-on-one with your therapist, the CPT program deconstructs these beliefs and replaces them with healthy supporting beliefs. As you change your beliefs/thoughts, you change your behaviours, which reduce the PTSD, anxiety and depression symptoms.

HOW IT WORKS

  • CPT is conducted on an individual session basis

  • You meet weekly with your therapist and go through a structured program with homework that is reviewd at the beginning of each session. This is an important part of the process. Failure to complete the homework results in the program being extended, as it will be conducted in session.

  • You are sent a CPT package and a weekly assessment

  • You learn how to identify and deal with beliefs that have arisen as a result of the trauma(s). This takes the power away from the belief as we examine it, tear it apart, and replace it with a supportive new belief.

  • We address key issues of safety, trust, power and control, esteem, and intimacy and their associated trauma beliefs
